LGBTQ Mentoring Program at LCCP's Coming Out Against Cancer Ball, February 7, 2004

Class of 2007
We came for the Lesbian Community Cancer Project and brought home an awesome experience and great memories. A group of students and staff in the LGBTQ Mentoring Program at the University arrived at about 3pm offering our manual labor. We set up about six bars, hauling ice, boxes of booze and expensive Rain vodka, all donated. After setting up the coat rooms we proceeded into the GENDER NEUTRAL bathrooms and emerged transformed from extra labor hands into elegant guests.
The Reception was pretty interesting. Many political candidates were there to show their support of the LCCP. But the highlight of the evening was witnessing our very own George Chauncey accept the Community Service Award (also known as the Lesbian of the year award!). He gave an extremely motivating speech about the advancement of equal rights for queer society and the struggle for gay marriage. After this reception, delicious hors d'oeuvres were served, and then more scrumptious desserts a bit later. The dance floor was the biggest dance floor I have seen yet! It was wonderful seeing such a diverse crowd all dancing together to Meshell Ndegeocello. Not only were there lesbian couples, gay couples, Blacks, Caucasians, Asians, Latinos but there was also a range of all ages!
Perhaps the most entertaining part of the event was the Post Office. We stuck numbered stickers on ourselves and walked around socializing. If you saw someone you wanted to say "Howdy" to or give a compliment to, we just had to look at their number and go to the booth with the paper, pens, tape, and number board. Periodically checking the board for a note from anyone, Evelyn got lucky and found one that read "You look so beautiful tonight!" Isn't that cool? So as the clock struck midnight, ending the night of socializing, dancing, and eating was a bit hard for us, but at least, we have pictures and our memories.
