Grammy-nominated contemporary Christian music artist Jennifer Knapp, who publicly came out in 2010, will perform Inside Out Faith at Rockefeller Chapel at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 10. The performance is sponsored by the Spiritual Life Office and Office of LGBTQ Student Life.
Part concert, part story telling event, Inside Out Faith is about breaking the cone of silence experienced by many LGBT people of faith. Through her passionate music and disarming charm, Jennifer will speak of the challenges she has faced in claiming her unique identity. It is the story of an honest, vulnerable and questioning soul, living out a journey of life, love and faith.
Jennifer Knapp spent her Christian music career challenging religious cultural stereotypes both on and off stage. Candid and compassionate in heart, rock-n-roll in her confrontational style, Jennifer’s impact on Christian audiences took a new turn in 2010 when she made public her long-standing same-sex partnership. From interviews with CNN, The Advocate & Christianity Today, to countless Internet blogs and a featured appearance on Larry King Live, the main question on everybody’s lips was: “Can you be Gay and Christian?” The revelation sparked much public debate amid cries for immediate rejection from Christian music leaders, retailers and fans alike.
As a direct response to supporting LGBT people of faith and their faith community allies, Jennifer currently advocates through Inside Out Faith. By publicly claiming her faith, her sexual orientation and encouraging others to do the same, Jennifer continues to inspire life-imitating art. Her candor and compassion have led to overwhelming appeals for her to engage the challenging issue of LGBT inclusion and affirmation in religious communities.
This event is free and open to the public.
